The old state Highway 1 route from Warkworth is great now that the motorway is complete, and so is the Old coast road past Hatfields and Orewa. Use the Orewa cycle way up to where you can cut across to East coast road. There was light traffic, mostly polite except, notably, road maintenance trucks with a sign on the rear saying “Please pass carefully”, and then we got to the cycleways along East Coast Rd. If you are heading into the city take the Devonport Ferry.
