Day 22 | Pipiriki to Whanganui

Down the river

Date: 10 Feb 2024

This is a nice ride. Tarsealed road, hardly any traffic, history, scenery, and a great cafe in the old school at Matahiwi.

The road flows up and down by the river so you get a bit of exercise rewarded by a swoop down a long hill, and repeat for 55 km until you climb the last big hill (only 180 m) and at the top, have a great view back up the valley with the river disappearing into the mist. A last big downhill and a couple of kms on SH4 to Upokongoro (I call it Upper Congo) and a cuppa at the Cafe Behind the Door, where Jill spotted its famous Nankeen Night Heron, a recent immigrant that lives only on the Whanganui River.

Also notable today – I used only 70% of my battery on a 77.5 km ride by putting in more effort and concentrating on turning the beast off more often. I might be getting a bit fitter as well.

Supplies: Whanganui.
