River or plains

From Miranda the traditional TA Route goes East to the Hauraki Rail Trail which we’ve done, and the thought of catching up with a cousin in Huntly then going down the Waikato river trails was much more attractive so we did. Good choice!
It’s the best of North Waikato rolling rich countryside with hardly a car in sight, and at Maramarua a surreal general store with (perhaps) the Quran booming from the speakers and potentially excellent curries and samosas. Too early for lunch we had quite nice coffee and we’ll definitely stop for lunch next time we’re through this way.
If you’re taking this option note there’s no facilities or accommodation along the route so you have to face 60 – 70 km of self-sufficiency, but it was a lovely way to spend a day on a bike and that’s why we do it. The Te Awa trail starts at Ngaruawahia so you’ve got a choice of motels at least in the area unless you have a lovely cousin Linda like I do.
