Kaikoura Trail

Should be a Great Ride

Date: 26 Nov 22
Grade: 2

CA few years ago we stayed in Kaikoura for a couple of nights and I swore I would never own a white motorhome because there were at least 6 in view at all times. I didn’t ever want to be a part of a crowd of conformists like that.

We stopped here, in our motorhome which we love, partly to park beside the Pier Hotel for the crayfish dinner and the view North across the whole bay, but also because we wanted to ride the trail, described as

“A mix of single tracks varying form native bush tracks to quiet country roads suitable for the easy to intermediate rider. Allow about 4 hours to complete the full loop or cycle a smaller section in a couple of hours.

It’s a fantastic afternoon’s fun. The off road sections ranged from easy to concentrate hard, with lots of slippery roots and rocks, but nothing too serious, and there’s no major uphill work, although it’s 150m at the top.

We did do a small detour at the beginning to go up to the lookout above town, then down the grade 3 track to South Beach, which I would love to do again when there are not so many walkers with small dogs and children making us Share with Care by walking.

The crayfish dinner was superb too.
