Waikato River Part 2
Date: 2 Feb 2024
From Tamahere (thanks Mark and Alison for your house, pool, beers and supplies) to Karapiro, the newest section of the Te Awa trail, is more of the wide concrete bike highway that all cycleways should strive to emulate – all the flat ones anyway. However, after 64 km of it, I was looking forward to the Waikato River trails for their gravel and twists, but this was not to be.
Te Awa trail ends on the west side of Karapiro dam and we needed to be on the east side to get to the next trail, however the dam road is closed, so we decided to flag the first section and go straight up Maungatautari Road which was fine easy rolling country with mostly friendly light traffic.
We stayed at Arapuni backpackers with the very friendly Cheryl. There are no shops here but there is a really good cafe, Rhubarb, which will be our first stop tomorrow morning.
