Twin Coast Trail
Date: 12 Dec 23
A short ferry ride in the late morning to Mangungu put us the road to Horeke and the Twin Coast Trail. With a stiff tail wind we cruised up the first 20km of beautiful valleys and along the river to the switchbacks up to Okaihau without using any power. We used plenty up the hill even though it’s only about 120m climb, and more with a bit of a headwind across to Kaikohe, then the same wind blew us down the hill and 10km beyond Kawakawa to our cabin with a spa pool. 96kms ! It was a clear night with the promise of the best display of meteors in years and we didn’t see any and it was a lovely place to be.
Gabi at Hukatere had told us about a woman who had come up to help care for the wild horses last year, and it turns out it was our hostess, Toni, who has horses here including a Kaimanawa, and she’s a pretty good weaver and makes horsehair bracelets as well.
